Dave Prizio: Building a Glastar
Taking over a project started by someone else and bringing it to completion is a special case of building a plane. Dave covers topics such as selecting a partly completed project, evaluating it, and getting it back home. He looks look at the pros and cons of living with work that others have done, both good and not so good as well as decisions about how to equip the new plane while staying within some sort of budget.

Stoddard Hamilton Glasair Promotional Video
My future midlife crisis mistress. My wife was ok with it ;)
And your plane have the best engines out there !!
Need winglets on the Glassair it would look even cooler!!
It's funny how almost every male in the video has a mustashe
Why oh why didn't they keep the GlaStar in production? It was just the perfect Aircraft The Sportsman 2+2 has gone "upmarket" and is ridiculously expensive these days.
Radical- because it looks basically, "stock."
A kit. Wait, what? I've been touring a plethora of kit plane and plenty of certified plane videos. This "video" shows Stoddard Hamilton planes to be shockingly well thought out in design, implementation, tolerance, eg. serial numbered components. And especially, employee ownership of the corporation. As old school as is this video, it is an excellent documentary. Has a feel and sound like documentaries produced by giant aerospace companies delivering on DoD contracts. A 70s 80s flavor, yet timeless given the detailed aspects provided by this film. As far as documentaries go, this is one of the best I've seen on RUclips. And I've been a RUclips subscriber since inception. I am hooked. 👍😎👍 Excellent production. Even Stoddard Hamilton films are: Apex centered.
I have 15 or twenty hours in one. It is definitely a good airplane. But it is WAY too tight in the cockpit. If I were to build one I'd either build it a lot wider, or else I'd make it a two place like a super cub. It is just too narrow inside to be considered a four seater. But that was the only complaint I had with it.
I want a 111
Seems a little optimistic.. 11:20 they claim 245 mph for a 180 hp version.. yet owners of the Glasair 3 300 hp claim 250 mph. I fly a 180hp Glasair 2 and get 190 knots, or 218mph. Still impressive but they don’t need to stretch the specs..
I grew up in Arlington where they are made . we lived at the end of the runway .. used to watch them fly over in the early stages of development of the model III.. always liked the Glasairs .. the speed . the sound
Are they still making kits
@@williamnovas9491 advanced-aero.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/G3-Brochure-2018-small.pdf
evoke said to do my rv-10 windows this way...Looks amazing!
This is perfect! Thanks! I’m looking at a used kit and brought up a lot of things I wasn’t thinking of.
This video posted in 2014 but I think it is much older. Still to this date, there is no other homebuit that can do what this plane does overall.
Yes, the video was produced in 1996.
Currently doing an AESP project on this aircraft.
thx for sharing.Kit no 7164
do they make a 4 place Glasair ??
The glasair glastar sportsman 2 + 2 seats four people
The performance of the III model is simply mind boggling
Thank you
This is an awesome airplane , please get with the times and get on social media and promote yourselves,( just don’t get woke and sjw or bend the knee for things you really don’t stand for)
What certified plane can come even close to this performance? At this price point.
Risen 915... at half the fuel burn. Just shows what modern technology can do
@@josephc.9520 lol
@@josephc.9520 that risen can do high g loads?
Spin recovery over a Concord? Not sure many people can say they did that.
Too expensive.
Not sure if you are monitoring this video still but...I am considering a Glasair as my first plane. I am just starting my piloting “career” and my local flying club seems to be pretty busy. Wonder if it’s worth considering? Or too much for a new pilot?
The Sportsman and GlaStar are mellow and as easy to fly as a 152 or 172.
You can buy a real airplane for the price of the sportsman.
Nice!
360p ? what a joke
The video is really old. What did you expect?
Resolution snob, lol
Do glastars make good bush planes.
Yes if set up that way.
I think Glasair needs to stick with what they are the best at, that badass Glasair III that goes 3 hundred miles per hour at 11 gallons per hour, that pulls up to 5 g's withour breaking a sweat. Maybe strengthen the gear on it and put some big flaps so we could land it on undeveloped grass strips too
Geez, why would you say that? I only did a demo flight in one, but it's a great flying plane.
Would a 3/4 ton truck be sufficient to haul/pull the sportsman, on an appropriate trailer,on a trip?
Yes - the Sportsman's typical empty weight is only 1350 pounds. The trailer does not to be beefy. See more: glasair-owners.com/glastar-sportsman/how-to-builder-tips-glastar-sportsman/glastar-hauler/
Looks like a 1970 video
LOL same here looks like 1970s
Anything older than a few months old now seems to look like they used potato cam
Actually late 80s or early 90's
@@danblumel yup .. i was there
Nice landings
I love this airplane I want one very much but what I would like to know that I have not been able to find anywhere is how much baggage can you fit with 4 passengers. I would love to see pictures of four people sitting in the airplane with baggage.
Glasair III fun Ap, got to build one..
🙆🙆😲😲😲😲😲
where could i see the cutaway of this aircraft?
Go to glastarnet.org to see details.
I wish Glasair could produce these kits again. They only do the high wing kits now.
Kits are now available from Advanced Aero. See more: glasair-owners.com/news/advanced-aero-g2-and-g3-heritage-kits-now-available/
I just want one with ALLISON 250(Rolls Royce ) engine with 450 hp.
Lol, "next of kin" was a bit of a Freudian slip. Might have missed an editing opportunity. Still some good dark humor value though.
And the irony is that it's the grandchildren, not the grandparents...
Great video! Loved the interviews with the pilot and the owner. I really want one!
Lot of talking in front of finished assemblage after build work. Not much actual footage walking viewers through the build process.
So just how much better does the 390 climb? Zero data given. Worthless video
I especially like their point 2! 😂😂
Does anyone know why Glassair stopped maintaining their website? This day and age a Company Website is the FRONT DOOR to the company. The last thing they stated was that some students were going to travel to Arlington from back east. Did they arrive? What did they do? Did they enjoy their visit, or did they just get drop-kicked like the website? I'm on the fence on either buying a Just Aircraft Superstol, or the Sportsman 2+2. I still have not seen any STOL performance data that shows its take-off and landing accomplishments, which makes me ask "Why". I did take a demo flight with Alan Negrin and I was impressed with its take-off power, but that was not enough for me to pull the trigger on one. If anyone here has a 180HP 2+2, can you share your performance data? Do you like the factory support? Regards, Stan McClain
Do you think I could take 3 other adult passengers with camping gear on this plane?
No. It's perfect for two adults plus a lot of gear.
Glasair Aircraft Owners Association including the pilot?
@@chrissequioa4376 Yes -pilot plus passenger plus gear. You could have three people on board, but the rear passenger would limit your gear space.
you could take all those people and all that gear but I don't think you'd get airborne unless it was a cold clear day at sea level ...
the back seat is not really suitable for two adults - maybe two kids or a big dog
People paying for the two weeks to taxi obviously have the disposable income to spend more, which for the majority of homebuilders is not the case. For the same money go out and but a good used 182 on floats!
How did this go broke twice?
Like the old trope says: The best way to make a small fortune in aviation is Start with a large one. This kit plane had many thousands of hours into it, not just for the builder but also for the factory. Probably 4000 man hrs. Which had to be paid for by the customer, half for company time and half in his/her own time and many friends time. It's a tough sell: Asking $100,000+ (Now it would cost at least $250-300k to complete it, with $100k kit, $60-70k engines, $20k prop, $30-50k avionics, $15-30k paint). PLUS Two to five years of your evenings and weekends.
I want one
Glasair is a pioneer in aviation. Amazing planes that hold many records and set new standards for utility and efficiency.
If only the general aviation corps and financiers get the fact that, that is a ton of cash. Financing at lower rates needs to happen or ga will not flourish and will remain the hobby of the rich or very well to do. Funny the air belongs to all,of us. Assuming a 2000 hr build time with costs of components (efis displays are way over priced) including engine. $125,000 should buy a lot of airplane and still leave 20k+ profit. 40k for components, 40 k to build, 20 k for engine, 20k for profit r search etc. just my opinion is all! And used certified airplane prices are just ridiculous, hence all the planes for sale for years at a time. Fair market value gets things sold! Inflated prices keeps thing in the “for sale” column!
agreed
yolanda jerginson Don’t give me your arrogance. Many people have changed this planet and they’re not rich, because they chose to do something good not good for them!
yolanda jerginson oh and I can handle all three axis, that would yaw pitch and roll, x y and z is for CAD
yolanda jerginson So eloquent with words and yet ghetto in the same sentence! Just another troll, I bet that you were just waiting for your computer or whatever to give you notification of my answer ha ha. You have revealed your true nature as one of the little ones. When faced by superior intellect you resort to calling names and using foul language, I figured as much! I have been a pilot since 1995, I worked hard to pay for it. I have flown jets, props and rotary wing. I just never had quite enough extra to actually own one, although I could purchase one easily, almost bought an L-29, yes there is difference.. Lastly, I served the greater good as a fire fighter for 35 years and don’t regret one minute of it and I would not call myself poor by any means. As a matter of fact I directly saved two person’s lives and indirectly so many others. I would not trade that for a million bucks or to own aircraft. Don’t bother replying, I owned you, live with it get a life!
